transmission problem

I am putting a trans together and when I put the bearing retainers on each side ,it locks up. This is a 29 trans with the bearing stops in the casting. Does this take special parts to make it work? steve

The oil baffle (or slinger) dimensions changed with the introduction of the snap ring bearing retainer. If the later oil baffle is installed in the earlier transmission it will bind up.

Don’t leave it out! You’ll need to install the size necessary for the early casting. The early main shaft had a flat spacer ring pressed onto the snout that carries the pocket bearing. The later main shaft uses a round ring shaped spacer. Either way a spacer needs to be there but if the ring is added to an early main shaft it will bind up.

If the baffle is installed backwards it will lockup the transmission, it’s a slinger not a seal, the outer edge is away from the bearings, I think ? 🤔 It’s been a while since I locked up my transmission, was a head scratcher for me

As to the differences between transmission housing and that "snap ring," Vince Falter covers the transmission housing variations in his usual detail and accuracy at

Note that the big change for the transmission housing comes with the change-over to a single plate clutch. The single plate transmission STARTED as the "ledge" type but was changed over to the snap ring in mid 1930. Contents wise, single plate transmission housings (type 3, 4, 5) are identical.
