Transmission noise - attempt two failed to solve the problem.

A few weeks back I posted about a noise I was getting from the transmission. When I depressed the clutch pedal the noise ceased. As a result of the feedback I replaced the pilot bearing and through-out bearing. A few health setbacks meant that this afternoon I finally started the car up again after putting it all back together.

....and the noise is still there. :(

But, the upside is that the noise is now more clearly identifiable as it varies as I change gears. It is loudest in Reverse and First, less in Second and less again in Third. Am I correct in assuming that my problem can really only be with the various gears etc. in the transmission case given the elimination of basically everything else?

On another matter. As I look to be dropping the rear end again, it has been suggested that it is easier to drop the rear spring from the body, rather than spread the springs and remove the shackles. I did a quick Google search and I have not been able to find any videos about how to drop the rear spring as suggested. Any links appreciated.

As always, many thanks for the kind advice and suggestions.

I suspect the front transmission bearing. The transmission is at the proper oil level?
I have the same noise in one car, if you are going slow in 1rst it's noisy, put it under a load like speeding up, it gets quite. I'll eventually replace all the bearings some day.

Drain the transmission oil and filter it through a milk filter (available at farm supply places). Look for metal particles. Run a magnet through the oil. If you get any metal then that is an indication that the transmission needs an overhaul.

Modern gear oils put a deposit on the gears and bearings that wears instead of the underlying metal. Use W85-140 G5 gear oil. Some owners have reported good results with STP but if you want to try that, use it in addition to the gear oil.

Since you are dropping the rear axle might consider pulling the trans and doing a thorough inspection and rebuild. As Wick suggested, a damaged front bearing would fit the presentation and would be the place to start. Although not suspect, with everything apart might change out the U-joint if it shows any wear/play. When I dropped my axle I used a spring spreader and disconnected the shackles. Discovered my shackle shafts we D shaped and needed to be replaced along with the bushings. Good Luck.
