Transmission Noise at Idle

Trying to pinpoint a noise at idle on my 56 292. Auto trans.. air cooled. I thought the noise was from the engine but someone else listened to it and thinks it is coming from the transmission area. Seems to quiet a bit when in gear at idle. Any ideas?

check the tabs that the torque converter bolts to on the flywheel, some tabs were just riveted and the rivetes wore and got loose and caused the torque converter to rattle

As ford3 said, the original flywheel/flex plate had riveted tabs that loosened up and let the convertor rattle at idle when the car was not under a load. I had this happen on a '56 Merc in the mid 60's. Went to Ford and got new replacement, a solid one piece conventional design flexplate...problem solved

It could be that your starter drive is not disengaging after start up. My 292/com buzzes for about 30 sec. after start up. Just a thought. Good luck if you haven't fixed it yet.
