Transmission main shaft snap ring install

The snap ring that holds the bearing on the main shaft is really fighting me on the install. I am using a new ring from Van Pelt and the USA made Lisle snap ring pliers. Mac’s book says to get one end in and then tap the other end in with a punch. This results in the other end popping out. Does anyone have any tips? I am also wondering that if all my attempts have over stretched the snap ring.
Thank you

Duke,

This snap ring can be a bear to get on. Hopefully Mac VP jumps in to give us his suggestions, but I've had luck installing on a bench and then installing it on the shaft and pressing it onto the shaft.

Either way, if possible, keep your fingers over the part of the ring that is already in the groove while you pull the open end and push it over the bearing and into the remaining groove.

I've also found it's a quick move. If you try to so slow, they tend to pop off the pliers.

You have the right pliers, it just takes a little practice to get the hang of it.

There are two front snap rings used to secure the front ball bearing to the main drive gear:
B-7064 which is used on the 32-48 transmissions
8A-7064 which is used on the 49-62 transmissions

The B-7064 is a bit snug when spreading the tips with your lock ring pliers. Pushing downward to help move the ring usually works. The 8A-7064 is smaller in diameter but is the same thickness, thus making it more difficult to spread the tips. I’ve pinched my finger tips doing these and have learned not to let any of Mac VP get trapped between the ring and the groove. That can make for a very sore finger for a few days.

Slightly grinding the end of the snap ring will make it fit the pliers better and make it easier to remove if necessary in the future.
