transmission is apart

.Well I took the clutch plates, planetary gears, and band drums apart today. I was really surprised how hard the gear came off the drum. I just about twisted the screw for the 3 jaw puller off. But I got it.

Now I'm going to throw everything in a tub full of degreaser and brush everything down and then check everything for cracks with some liguid dye penetrant

Then if everything looks OK I'll order some clutch discs and start putting everything back together.

After all that I'll take the magnets for the magneto off and remagnetize them then put that back together. Put on a new Mag coil plate. Build up the babbitt on the rear main to get rid of the excessive crankshaft endplay.

Then start putting the engine and transmission back together. New gaskets should go a long way on it's need to leave it's mark everywhere.

Then respoke the wheels and rebuild the bows for the top. Hopefully my new canvas top will be here before spring and I'll ask my buddy Farmallcub49 to help me put the top on.

Then God willing and I make it through the winter. I'll be ready for the tours next summer.

I just did the same job about 3 weeks ago, so I can relate! Is this a 26-27 trans? If it is dont forget to change the clip on clutch plate dogs inside the clutch drum... a cheap investment for sure!
Once apart, my trans looked like it was R&R'd around 1970 and never driven since, but, the low speed drum was worn through from steel rivets and was doomed to failure. I bought a used one from a race guy up here and re-bushed it. What a picnic!
I used a midsized Blue Point puller on mine with a bit of heat. The worst part was the clutch drum. My pullers arms wouldnt make the two holes for pulling, so I made up a pair of J bolts from some good simplex stud (not the hardware store stuff!) and those broke several times. I ended up taking 2 pairs of small shackles (again, good ones!) hooked them in the holes and onto the puller cross bar and it still took a 1/2 breaker bar to get it off!
Just wait until you hafta time the triple gears onto the sun gear and driven gears! Keep a box of band aids nearby! Hows the mag coil look? Mine was bad from an amatuers' attempt to pull the starter, of course! ws

Mines a '22 engine. The clutch drum pulled easily enough however I had a heck of a time pulling the gear so I could get the band drums off. I use OTC pullers but only because I worked for OTC for 20 years and know the quality of their product. I did have to really get on the gear with a midsize 3 jaw and a breaker bar, but by using some of the language my father taught me those many hours in the garage (the rest I learned in the army) I was able to get it apart. I'm going to change the clutch discs only because I've got the ****** apart now and I don't want to have to deal with it again. While I worked at OTC I learned how to do Dye Penetrant inspection using the dye and the deveroper. I'm thinking this knowledge will finally come in handy for me.
I'm going to replace my mag coil. Mine seems to have been the victim of some maniac trying to pull the starter bendix through it. So, though I'm excited to get it going again I'm definitely having a good time.
Yachtsmanbill, it'll be fun to watch your car and Fordman67's too come together. I wish my back and legs could take standing on the concrete just a little bit longer. But I learned long ago not to push my luck.

WS, i turned 61 in June. I try to be as active as possible. I've had some serious back injuries that resulted in several (5) surgeries. But I'm usually able to put in about 4-5 hours a day if I behave myself. I'd love to post pictures but I can't remember how I've done it in the past. The Polinator is an interesting looking project. What do you figure it's going to be when it's done?

Ideally, its gonna be a Caterpillar yellow and gloss black period incorrect speedster. I have strong family ties to Caterpillar tractors. Another story... Yellow and black reminds me of a bumble bee, and in my YOOT, I was quite the pollinator with the young ladies LOL...
God bless, Ive never had back problems. I used to weigh in at 500 (FIVE HUNDRED pounds) and had stomach bypass surgery (yet another story!) and am now a svelt 265. All the years of chronic obesity lent itself to developing severe arthritis... 5 knee jobs, carpal tunnel twice, elbow and shoulder jobs and a myriad of other faults. Boo Hoo Hoo... I too try to stay as active as I can. I also own a 1963 aluminum 36 foot chris craft Roamer, and a 65 foot hatteras motor yacht. Nothing like trying to paint 3000 square feet on a two story ladder haha! Had the Roamer coming up on 40 years. Boats will beat you to the bone!! ws

Oh smack Bill, Dose boats are something else. If you ever need someone to help you take one of those out I'm pretty sure I can find my way from St Cloud, MN to Two Rivers Wisconsin. Right now I think I'm packin' too much weight at 265 lbs. I'd love to lose about 75 lbs but I've got a really nasty habit when it comes to food. I keep eating like there won't be any tomorrow. Didn't get out to the shop today. This Christmas stuff sure can get in a guys way. So tomorrow is going to be spent degreasing and cleaning transmission parts.

Boy, u guys are having all the fun! My trans is just sitting on my work bench...pleading to me to work onit...I however am in christmas wood working mode presently. BUT after that I have two side automatic trans jobs in the shop...then maybe I will get to tear into that trans. If u need any trans parts I have 2to extra. Both 17 vintage though.
Bee good! And MERRY CHRISTMAS!

St Cloud is a walk in the park from here... maybe only 6-7 hours, maybe 20 in a T !! You arent known as gunman from Shevlin Mn. in another life are you??
That big ol' Hatteras is on the auction block (well next week maybe) for what I paid for it in '06. Just cant afford it anymore. It was hurricane RITA (after katrina) damaged in New Orleans. Bought it at an auction there, got it up and running, then made a 21 day trip to Chicago with it. Shes got 12-71 N Detroits three baths etc etc... the ******* holds 1000 gallons of fuel to boot! I put my last 100K into it and need to walk away. We were gonna run it back south and live winters down there but I dont see that happening. We are settled in up here and the Roamer does us just fine! Wat more economical with a pair of 454s! ws
