Hi I have a Ford top loader transmission in a race car. ID number on bell housing is 18-74274427. It has the slant top shift tower on it now. Is this a 1934 transmission? Thanks.

You have way too many digits for a 1934 transmission. 1934 transmissions with a V8 engine were numbered between:

☆18-457,478☆ and ☆18-1,234,356☆

Could you post a close-up picture of that number stamped into casting?

O.K. So from a V-8 or 4 cylinder? Now if it dose not work I can secure parts for it. Attached to a 1949 226 H engine. Been sitting since mid 1970's. Took it apart cleaned it up and reassembled it. Shift tower is slant type but has no screws (detent)that go into it from either side so do not know if that is 33 also. Looked up online but did not see one like it. Stick comes straight out of tower for about an inch or two then makes a bend (about 35 degrees) then straight to end where shifter knob screws in.

We've seen no picture, but if its on a 6cyl, it would be a v8 trans. Parts are available, get Mac Vanpelts trans book to identify parts and rebuild. Parts from vanpelts sales, or sometimes NOS stuff on ebay.

Don't think there is a difference between V8 and 4 cylinder transmissions for '33. Shift tower sounds like original to that case. MacVanpelt will know. Maybe he will chime in.

The four-cylinder transmission cases for '33s and '34s are the same as those for '32 fours and are fundamentally different from those cases for V8 engines. The gears within the case are the same, four or V8, and the shift lever housings are also the same, four or V8, '33 and '34.

Great to know. Engine has 2 1 barrel carbs, headers, 3/4 race cam, dual point distributor and milled head so have about 125 H.P. to locked up rear end. Transmission should hold up to this. Exhibition racing only. Thank to the forum. Appreciate it.

As David notes ABOVE, '32 thru '34 4-CYLINDER trans cases are the same. Difference between 4-CYL (right) and V8/6-CYL cases (left) is obvious BELOW.

"Orca62"....The big clue in your case is the "I8-" prefix in your stamped number. As most of us know, the "I" represents a "1" (one) in Ford serial numbers. So, the prefix is "18-", which signifies only "V8" in Ford serial numbers. Hence, your case was originally behind a '33 V8 engine!
