Transmission Fluid Change Procedure

Unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission housing and drain the oil out. Reinstall the plug. Remove the plug on the side of the transmission case. Fill to spill, which means dump oil in until it spills over. Let it run off and reinstall the plug.

I buy my 600W from Bratton's, it comes in quart plastic squeeze bottles. Cut the tip off the snout and put your finger over it until you have the container at a proper angle and squeeze.

Some people will argue that the level should be a half inch below the side spill port. I don't think it makes much difference.

Finish up by poking a wire through the vent hole in the tower to make sure it is clear of crud.

Place a can under the trans drain plug and remove plug. Oil will run into can,when it stops running out replace plug.Then fill through the side plug till even with the hole put plug back its and good to go. LOL. ken ct.
 
Final tip... replace drain plug prior to refilling! (Yes, before anyone asks, I've done it)

I always install a small super magnet in the pockets of the plugs. It's amazing how much fine metal grit will show up on the magnet. Much better on the magnet than in the berings.

This is fully outlined in the Model A Instruction Book.

In a nut shell.

Drain.
Flush with Kerosene.
Fill to level of filler hole.

Lots of important basic info in the Manual. You just need to correct for some changes in life in modern lubricants, generally it is safe to run longer before changes. This is because modern additives mediate the build up of harmful chemicals.
 
I would add a couple of nits to what has been posted above:

1. Drive the car before hand; warm transmission fluid drains quicker than room- temperature lubricant;

2. Wipe down the area around the drain and fill plugs (I know, basic mechanic's housekeeping...);

3. Inspect any material found in the cupped "recess" of the drain plug; and

4. In line with #1, warm up the new lubricant so it flows into the transmission quicker. I submerge the plastic bottle the 600w lubricant usually comes in (up to the shoulder of the bottle so no water contaminates the lubricant) in a bucket of very hot water for about 10 minutes.

And - if you drive the car immediately before changing the transmission lubricant - beware the hot muffler. You needn't ask how I know this...
 
NO, the "vent" is a small hole on the back side of the shift tower, above the floor. There was a picture posted a day or two ago.

When its empty put the plug in add a little kerosene rock the car back and forth and drain it. This will help pull out some sludge that collects at the bottom
 
Informative thread...for me. Since I have no idea what and when the last service was done on Sarah, when she arrives, I shall service her all except the crankcase oil, they changed that, I could see. I plan on draining the radiator and adding 50/50 antifreeze. The transmission I shall drain also and add???????? This thread mentioned nothing about STP and I've read it in many transmission related threads about the use of STP helping the shifting of gears.
 
As a new owner the task for me was much easier with the floor removed --just to see the level upon refill. And put something over the muffler....
 
Be sure and take a shop rag and wipe off any gear oil residue that may have over flowed on the transmission case.
