Transmission Drum Cluster - 1925

Good morning Guys,

I'm assembling my balanced and rebushed drum cluster and want to be sure of proper clearance between each drum or the total for the assembled three drums.

I assume the clearance is determined by how far you press the end gear onto it's shaft going into it's I.D. I've been told that endplay should be approx. .018" for the total package. May have your advice on this subject? Thanks a bunch...

The drive gear is pressed on flush and the play is set with the 3 thrust washers between the clutch drum when it pressed and locked into place and brake drum. The .018 sounds about right.

The three new thrust washers are .045" thick each. That seems like a lot for expecting ample clearanc after assembly. Do I need to use all Three?

That what the book calls for. Assemble the transmission with the triple gears, clutch drum and washers on the flywheel and see what your clearance is. You don't need to install clutch disks and driving plate to do this.

I should add, if your bushing in the brake drum is the flanged type that forms part of your thrust surface (shouldn't be but who know what happen in the last 90 years) then that would change the number of washers.
