Transmission Colors?

Am I correct in assuming that the trans case and shifter top castings are painted Ford Engine Green before assembly? How about the rear bearing retainer casting? Inspection cover gloss black? Inspection cover screws unfinished? Shifter cover bolts raven? Bell joint clamp halves (cast or stamped) black?

To properly hotrod a car, first you must restore it...
I think the castings were painted before machining, actually, so flanges would be bare. Bolt finishes called out in catalog. A proper clamshell is inside a 2 inch deep ball of grease and mud. Might be black under there.

Ford boxes up thru 1942 were the dark green like the engine. I think the Merc boxes from 1939-48 were dark blue like the engine. The Ford boxes (and the engine) went to dark blue in 1946 til 48.

In 1949 I think Ford stopped painting the gearboxes but that could be incorrect. I have also heard that some assembly plants painted the gearbox and some didn't. Color (if painted) was black I think. At some point in the 1950's they stopped painting the gearbox altogether.

The 1932-48 inspection cover was chassis black. I believe the screws were unfinished but the bible would say. The shifter housing cover bolts were probably unfinished as hardware but I think they may have received the same paint as the gearbox color.

You may want to check in with the Early Ford V8 Club website for confirmation on these details.

Mac- I'm putting together a shopping list from your site for the trans I've been discussing here on the Barn. It's out of an early '35 with an "18" case and a "68" shifter. I didn't see the 7233 shifter detents (mine are worn,) 7234 detent spring (broken,) or the pins that mount the forks to the rails. Got them? Thanks!
