I do not have my transmission apart yet, nor am I likely to in the near future, but I have a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd on occasion. I am well versed in double de-clutching having used the technique for some 50 years since learning to drive in a 1927 Austin Seven back in the day.
I know many disagree but I tend to double de-clutch up and down the gears as this is what I was taught, right or wrong. I do this even on our more modern collector cars with fully synchromesh transmissions, not only does it sound good, but done properly reduces the wear on the synchromesh rings.
The problem usually manifests itself if I hang onto 1st gear for a longer than usual period such as crossing an uphill intersection over an eight lane road close to home. I have tried a single de-clutch and a double de-clutch in this kind of situation. Neither seem to provide an answer. I can usually select 2nd gear when the car comes almost down to walking pace. If I shift up early, the shift is usually faultless.
Although somewhat embarrassing in rush hour, the problem is not about to make me tear the transmission apart tomorrow as there are no other nasty symptoms.
Any suggestions?
