Transmission, 1955 Victoria

After driving around town couple of days ago when I pulled away from a stop sign I heard a whir in the transmission. Didn't feel anything going on but that was a new sound. Checked the transmission fluid level, at idle, and the level was up to the full level. Didn't notice any bubbles but I will check that next time. I'd appreciate any suggestions on whether I have a problem developing with the transmission. That is the first time I have heard the whir but there have been 2 or 3 times that I heard a "clank" as I shifted from low to reverse as I backed into the garage. Pretty sure it isn't the U-joints. Thanks

As to the 'whir' ...

How many miles are on the trans and have you has it serviced any time recently (fluid change - bands adj - throttle linkage adj)?

There is a band that functions for reverse as Kultulz mentioned. It may need adjustment. A whir seems to be a rotating related sound. There are a lot of things that rotate in there from the torque converter to the pump & shafting so it's hard to say. If it only does it in say just 2nd gear, then it would be something to note but it's hard to say if there is any problem in there just yet. If it does it all the time and continues or gets louder then there may be some concern there.

Look at the air intake duct on the air-cooled Ford-O-Matic converter (driver side). If the rat-wire screen is gone, there could be a maple leaf stuck in there and rubbing up against the converter impeller. DONT stick your hand in there while the engine is running.
