Trans. Pedal Shaft "O" rings

Gentlemen,

Looking for guidance in sealing the shafts of the pedals going through the Hogs head. While taking the H/H apart for cleanig I found thin "O" rings sandwhiched between the cam adaptors and the H/H case.
The cross section of each, measured approximately .059" and the I.D. .541". While assembling with new "O"rings, I discovered those rings are too thin and did not remain clamped in the counter bore of the cams. They bulged out not sealing at all. Did the factory originally install "O" rings? It appears to be perfect application for a ring, so has anyone successfully rebuilt using rings? Would a larger section ring be the answer and does the counter bore (chamfer) in the cams need to be inlarged? Your suggestions, please.

I sure would appreciated it and I know my garage floor would appreciate it.

Thanks...

The O-rings are sold by most all of the T-parts vendors ($1.00-$1.50 for a set of four), and they were not factory original, a modern solution to an old problem. As Herm had said any good bearing supplier should be able to help you out with O-rings (Bearing Service in Woodhaven, Detroit Ball Bearing in Warren). You may also want to try a "real" hardware store (Studz on Telegraph or Dukes on Ford Road, I would try Dukes), they should have a good selection of O-rings available. You could also try Production Tool Supply in Redford, I know you can buy an O-ring assortment kit which is a nice thing just to have in the garage or workshop for that "just-in-case" moment.
