trans flaty to y block

With all of the expense and effort required to put a Y block into a vehicle that had a flat head, why not step up to the plate and install a later model 302 engine and trans into the car.
I had two small T-Birds for several years, a '56 & 57. Still have the '56 that has a 68 302 and a C-4 trans. The '57 was dead stock 312 w/AT. The 302 was much peppier than 312

The Y-block has a different bell housing pattern. The 1P small case units were used through 1954 so they changed the units somewhat in 1955. The 272 used the later PAK-C /D types that were a little different than the older 1P series of Small case F-O-M units. The 272 was used into 1956 so there are other later units that were designed to work with that CID Y-block. The Y-blocks are all the same bell housing pattern so about anything that fit a Y-block could be used but I'd gravitate toward a later type unit like a C4 or an AOD. The adapters might be expensive but they are much better transmissions in function. The old units were linkage controlled through a throttle valve in the transmission so a person would need all that stuff to fit the 272 or other similar Y-blocks. It wasn't till 1961 that the vacuum modulated units showed up.
