Trans and bell housing

I have another question regarding swapping out my transmission. The previous owner had replaced the clutch and bearings etc. before I bought the car.

The Les Andrews manual says to remove the transmission and bell housing as one unit and then take it apart once outside the car. My question is, can the transmission be removed and replaced without removing the bell housing from the engine block?

I'm sorry. Please excuse the dumb question. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the four bolts that mount the transmission to the bell housing can only be accessed from inside the bell housing.

You are correct. The trans/bell housing must be removed as a unit. A design that was later changed after the Model A years.

Never be afraid to ask a question on this forum. That is how we help each other learn about these great machines.

A Model A came into a friends repair shop a while back where someone had installed the bell housing before installing the transmission. The four bolts that attach the transmission to the bell housing were missing. The car was in drivable condition except that you could rotate the whole transmission from side to side with the gearshift handle.

In this case you could remove the transmission without having to remove the bell housing.

Now that's a scary one! Gave me a great laugh Tom! I guess it gets the shifter out of the way when you need to!
