Tractor Progress

I hope this post is appropriate. If not, my apologies. Here is a progress photo on my 9N tractor with 8BA Flathead. I finally got it painted over the weekend. I have never painted anything like this before so it was challenging. The wind was blowing and I had to pick out a few leaves, but it turned out OK. I have appreciated the advice on the engine. I hope to hear it run in the next few weeks.

Nice job, what paint did you use?, I painted the bucket on mine with Rustolium sunrise red. When you get that running looks like you will be able to tear up the back forty rather quickly.

I used Rustoleum Implement Ford Red from Tractor Supply. Painted it with a HVLP gun from Harbor Freight. Thinned it just a little as it was pretty thick. It has 2 coats on it. Used about half a gallon. I was surprised at how far it went, I had assumed it would take most of the gallon.

Nice, now the big question what you going to do with the hood? I'm curious. They say
to lengthen about 4 inches? Also I have terrible luck with rustoleum I get about 4yrs
then it turns pink. It needs some kind of UV additive 'i think' Then watch out for
tractor supply Ford gray, its nowhere close its like white'ish. Then went to
a museum in Carolina's one with a 60hp V8 that had origional hood...

The original hood had a very bad bondo and "aerosol overhaul" job. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got if off. I will have to go aftermarket hood, but there is none available for a 9N. You have to use 8N which looks very similar except it has an air intake vent that the 9N never had. The fenders are not much better, I will need at least 1. The kit I bought to install the V8 includes a filler panel off the dash that raises the hood in the back and 2 brackets to raise it in the front. The filler also adds the 4" to move forward. They just did not make the photos. My plan for now is to finish it less the hood and save up for a hood in the Spring. At that time I will paint the new hood, fenders, and the wheels.

Beautiful, how can you not like old tractors? The purity of function and mechanical-ness is sublime. I have zero need but would still like to have one.

Looks like you are doing a great job. Just from looking at the pictures, I have a couple of odd questions, as I know nothing about these. First, does the V8 bolt to the tractor transmission using all stock parts, or are some special pieces required? Second, is the bolt pattern on the front wheels the same as "Wide-5"?

I see an Oops! 9N's are solid gray, no red. Plus, it is a different shade of gray than the sheet metal on 8N's.
Find a Sherman over/underdrive unit and in 3rd overdrive that 8BA should push you up around 50 MPH!

The V8 bolts to a roughly 1" thick adapter plate that bolts where the old engine was. That adapts the bolt patterns. There is a box that uses the V8 engine mounts that replaces the original engine that was the mount for the front end.

I have heard that the wheels are close but do not interchange.

The color is intentional. I think the red pops a lot more than gray.

I would love to have a Sherman. I will keep looking.

Nice job so far. I'm not sure where you are located, but when I was restoring a cub tractor that I use to have, I was buying used parts from Wengers in Meyerstown, Pa. They are a tractor scrap yard. You might look them up as they might have a used hood available. Bill

Have you checked with Dennis Carpenter for your sheet metal needs?

Unfortunately he has the side panels but not the hood itself for 8N back. His hoods start for the NAAs.

There are a number of suppliers that have new hoods. Not sure if any are better than others. Looks like a hood, side panels, and a grille are about $600 or so.

There are a number of places that part tractors, but none close to me. I am in Chattanooga, TN. I also watch Craiglist for parts tractors, but haven't seen anything locally. Ideally I will find one with a decent hood and a Sherman. If you never have dreams, they never come true :)

That is a great job you are doing! I used to have an 8n with a 6 cyl 'Funk' conversion. I would love to do a V8 someday. Who makes the adapter kit you are using?

Awesome Henry makes the kits. Interestingly I talked to the owner Don Knasel last Fall and got a quote. Then when I went to order in March I learned that he had died. There is a family friend running it now in his spare time. The cost went up about $300 I think as well. It is still the best and most complete kit out there that I have found. Red Rock also makes a kit but theirs leaves lengthening the hood to you. I am not a body guy so I ponied up for the good kit. I am pretty happy with it. My only comment besides poor instructions is that it is really designed for an 8N. the 9N and 2N work but there are some small changes that require adaptation along the way. Nothing huge, just some thought-but that is part of the fun.
