Towing a T?

Jalopy Tin

Senior Member
Hallo model T lovers :) I plan to make a tow bar from a V8 wishbone and use on my runabout, so i can take my jalopy with me without driving it.
BUT.. now i have heard that with the planetary "gearbox" that is not so easy.. or?
Please clear my sky, how do i solve this eventually problem.
With or without the spark plugs...

Not a problem - but you will be very unpopular on the freeway at 25 mph! Much faster could turn some of your T into schrapnel. Centrifical force is very powerful.
A simple 2 wheel trailer would be an easy project. A torsion sprung axle, 2 pieces of channel iron & your tow bar for a tongue & you are much safer.

The "T"s dont tow well and build up a lot of heat insides when just towed a block or two. Ts are never really in a neutral transmission position with some drag no matter what position we are in.
I agree with Jack a small trailer is the way to go.

You can build free wheeling hubs for the rear, some use this for towing. But, I do think that a small trailer would be the best. Good news, is that the T doesn't weigh much.

If its an open trailer, you gotta watch your hood, floor bards and cushions, so they don't fly out.

Tom, Take the guys advise an look for a trailor, I think you`ll be a lot happier or just pack a suitcase an drive it, thats even better!!! Monte
