Torque tube removal

When I took off the clam shell, there was water and grease in the assembly. It looked kinda crusty. I have taken the keeper off of the spline in front of the speedo gear, but the gear and bearing will not slide off. It is stuck pretty tight. I have stood it on end and held it off the ground and tapped on the end of the drive shaft. I have also heated the gear in the housing and still cant get the gear to come off. Any suggestions?

It is not clear to me what you are trying to do. Has the torque tube been disconnected at the banjo and removed from the drive shaft, or is the drive shaft still inside? If what you are trying to do is removal of the front roller bearing and gear from inside the torque tube, and the drive shaft has been removed, there is a technique.

Place a 1 & 1\16" six-point, 1\2" drive, deep socket over the end of the drive shaft spline. Put the torque tube back over the drive shaft and with everything standing vertical bounce it on the floor a number of times. The socket should drive the grease seal, bearing, race, speedo drive gear, and thrust washer out of the torque tube.

If the drive shaft is still inside the torque tube, disconnect it from the banjo, remove the speedo gear housing, remove the radius rods and put a steel rod through the bolt hole for the radius rods at the front of the torque tube and tap on it with a suitable heavy hammer.

Go to www.ocmafc.org and click on tech articles, then click on my articles. There is a dissertation on rear end rebuilding that addreses torque tube removal and disassembly.

Thanks Tom, I have removed the rearend from the car and cant get the torque tube off. I have disconnected the bolts from the banjo and the tube wont come off. The speedo drive is stuck on the splined shaft and wont come forward to remove the drive, seal and bearing.

Soak it in Penitrating Oil.

If you have not already done so, remove the speedo "Driven" Gear Housing "Turtle". You then can use a punch and hammer and drive the speedo "Drive" Gear forward and off the end of the drive shaft. After that, the torque Tube should slide forward and off the drive shaft. You may ruin the Drive Gear in the process but this can be replaced.
