Torque tube isuse

My shortened torque tube is binding up(42 rear/tube, 32 frame). Does shorting the torque tube change the geometry? Is my new center bearing misaligned? Or considering the torque tube is shortened should I not run a center bearing at all?

If its not the camara angle,it looks like you got a bend in the tube, which would account for the bolt holes being off a 1/2 hole in the other pic. OMO. ken ct.

The tube was cut down on a lathe, it's not out of round.

Note that it's on its side. It bolts up but its binding.

Put it back in the lathe and see if the face that bolts to the rear end is 90 degrees to the centerline of the torque tube.
It could have gotten warped when welded.

no

Misaligned tube or bent shaft if center and front bearings are good.

Either way it doesn't matter

I just did a 40 rear into a 32 and left the center bearing in, runs good with no vibration.

The center bearing may need to be replaced. A lot of folks take the ends off of the early OEM tapered tube drive shafts and make up a new shaft with straight steel tube. The tube types don't need a center bearing like a solid shaft tends to need. A person can knock the center bearing out after making up some tools to do the job. Replacement bearings are available from Skip Haney. Check this out: http://www.flatheadv8.org/drivebearing.htm

You need to do a bit of sleuthing to work out what is wrong.

I would mount the axle with the shaft sticking straight up in in the air and watch the shaft while rotating it. It should spin straight and true. If it is not straight and true, it needs to be straightened until it does run straight and true.

I would then lower the torque tube over the known straight shaft and look at how it aligns to the axle. I would rotate the TT and if it is out of alignment, the end will always be out but rotating with the torque tube. (Hard to explain). If it does not align, it needs reworking until it does.

If it does align to the axle radially, then you need to see that it closes to the axle squarely, contacting all the way around at the same time. If it does not, that means the flange is not square and that would need attention.

If you have to push or pull anything to get it to align, it's not right.

My is torque tube is bent. apparently, the torque tube bent when it drew up while cooling from welding the radius rod lug back on.

Is a stock 32 ford torque tube a direct replacement? will the later(40's) driveshaft and 48" radius rods work with it? this is in a 32 frame.
