Top Sealer

I just finished the top on my Victoria Leather Back. It turned out much better that I had in my nightmares about how difficult it would be.

I have read much about different kinds of sealers and it appears that silicon is not good for outside use on roofs or tops. The LB top material I used is a naugahyde appearing material and I am not sure which sealer I should use for the drip moulding, header moulding and other tack covering strips.

Do you have any recommendations for a sealer ??

Thanks

I called LB today and talked to the lady who takes the orders .... she said that they didn't put them on anymore and didn't carry the seal any more ...and she consulted someone in the shop .... who suggested I go to a hardware store and get something !!!

I went to a canvas and sail shop and got a gallon of waterproofing liquid. It's clear, and they assured me it would not discolor the material. It's what they use on sails, sun umbrellas, car covers and the like. It was $30 for the gallon. And it stinks! But they promised me the smell would go away soon.

Griots Garage has an excellent top dressing, it's called Black Vinyl Top Reconditioner. I bought some last year for my 29 Special coupe and it does a great job. I bought mine on line, look up Griots Garage. Of course this is only good for a black top.

Dave, Check out convertible top dressings. I use Ragg Topp on my modern with the cloth top but they also have dressings for vinyl. Has kept me dry so far. Good Luck on whatever you chose, Clyde

Congratulations on the sucessful top install Dave. I used 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive #051135-08001 to seal around those areas that you mention for my Victoria Leatherback top. It comes in a 5 oz. tube, is waterproof, light yellow in color (looks OK if you get a little on tan top material) and glues/seals all materials to metal. It is available from all of the major Model A parts vendors and/or your local auto parts dealer.

I have use the "Rag Top" on my '66 Mustang top and it works very well. I also have used the #M skuper Weatherstrip Adhesive around sealing window parts.

Some additional research turned up a special seam sealer in a beige, black, and grey colors and is silicon free. Excellent under ultra violet and wet conditions. I may order a tube of this product .... which is made by Wurth .... and test it before putting it on the new top.

Ragg Top cleaner and also their sealer works well on my Corvette cloth top and is recommended by most top manufacturers. I have used it and also 303's cloth top products (a little cheaper) on the sport coupe top, but really it needs replaced so I can't say it did much (other than maybe waterproofing?).
