Top Irons - Fasteners

Went to install common sense (twist) fasteners (side curtains) to my open pickup top irons only to realize that they do not fit into the inner channel of the side rails. :( Since there is a channel running the full length inside the rail, I wonder if there should be some material (wood, leather, etc) in the channel for the screws to hold to? If so, would the material run the full length or only at the locations of the common sense fasteners? Photos would be most helpful.

thanks, as always, for the info and pix

your fastener seems to have paint on it. would the original be bright nickle or first installed and painted black?

This original top had been through it all so you can't go by that. With that said, they likely were painted in black lacquer as part of the top assembly but I suspect would not be accepted as it should be.
