Too much oil?

On my new to me 29 Sport Coupe I changed the oil before starting it for the first time. I recently noticed it has an oil leak. It was not doing this before I changed the oil. At first I suspected the drain plug but it doesn't seem to be coming from that. This is a pretty substantial leak. It's leaving a nice slick on my floor and I can tell it's fresh oil. It seems to have stopped after not running it for a few days. I put a full 5 qts of oil in the car but now I am wondering if I should have only put 4.5 in? Could having too much oil in it cause it to leak?

Do you think that could be causing my leak? Perhaps I should take some out? Although enough of it might have already leaked on the floor.

Like Tom, I only put 4 qt's in mine, and I still get a few drops on the floor after a 8-10 mile drive, Cardboard will take care of that.

they have a level that they like . when it goes down to that they dont leak anymore. all 3 of mine do that. they hold so much oil in the dipper tray.......Dave

A rebuilt engine takes one quart down the dizzy hole and about four more in the filler tube to bring it up to "full." Quite a bit of oil stays up on the winding tray. Maybe even a quart. That lets the rod dippers pack some oil in the journals as soon as you start the engine -- even before the oil pump brings some up from the oil pan.
When you drain all the oil out of the oil pan, old oil still remains in the indentations in the winding tray ... maybe even a quart.
Bottom line ... check the line on your dip stick when you put in the new oil.
