Todays Question

My 1929 special coupe was making noise when you backed off accelerator when turning or not. Removed rear and took it apart, found pinion nuts backed off pinion. I am in process of rebuild.

I think Brentwood Bob left something out of his post #3, so I put it in for him:

see if you can see anything in the banjo. Also jack up the rear end off the ground, start it up, and put in in gear. Then put a foot on one of the rear spinning tires..... ,get thrown on your back quickly, then when you regain consciousness look under the car.... and see if the rear end is noisy thru the spider. Check the transmission fluid, and the differential lube for metal.

Dave's naturally quick reflexes would kick in and save the day.
He is tougher than he appears to be.
This is actually a decent test, but you need big feet. Dave is also equipted for this requirement.

I had a engine pan crack on me by the front oil pan bolt . Boy what a noise it scared the s....! Out of me . Every time I hit a bump it clicked loudly. The driver behind me in his A herd it. Pulled over gave it a good wack with a hammer all was good till I replaced it.

yep. Glad to hear all your tests on possible problems came up negative.
Did you try to recreate the sharp turn?
I expected more flac on the spider test, since I haven't actually done it myself. i would put the motor at low idle in gear.
Bob

I jacked the rear just off the ground on stands and put the car in forward motion mode, low gear. I have done this before and it works well, just apply pressure to the outside rear of the tire where it is coming up. Doesn't take much pressure to stop it and the other side will double its rotation. If there is a real problem, you'll hear it. I did it on both sides. Seems to me that I may have run over one of the small valve caps like for a hydrant that was loose and it seated. No problems show up and I've driven miles, maybe 20 since.
