To Paint or not to Paint

Rebuilding a 59AB is there any advantage to painting the interior of the block and what type of paint.

If it was cleaned well there is no need for paint, and if it wasn't cleaned well the paint won't stick. Just my way of saying save the effort, your time is better spent elsewhere. Thirty years ago I painted a block interior with GE Glyptal. Glyptal is a paint used by electric motor manufacturers. The purpose was to enhance the oil drain-back to the pan; what a crock. That oil is going down just fine without the paint. All the "buff books" made that a popular thing to do years ago, but one of the savviest racers I know never read any of them.
 
why would you want to paint the inside of an engine? no one will ever see it. and it wont rust inside because of all the oil being thrown around inside, save the money and spend it on more and better parts lol
 
I would be worried about the paint flaking off and plugging up stuff. Seems like, all things considered, the risks and effort outweigh any potential benefit.
 
I worked in an auto machine for 50yr's. I saw quite a few engine painted onside form the factory, International, Studabacker, I'm sure there were others. Walt
 
It may be overkill, but of all the engines I've torn down in the last 45 years, the ones that were painted on the inside not only had no chips missing, but no sludge build- up (the pan might be full, though!).
 
I believe the original reason to use it inside engines was to seal any porosity in the casting (especially aluminum alloys) and retain any small bits of casting slag...Bob L

If you have the time and money (in my opinion) to waste, by all means do it. Remember your engine is 60 plus years old and never knew it was missing it. If you do it 'Glyptal' is the only thing to use.:)

I just finished a rebuild of a Ford/Borg Warner 3-speed overdrive trans that came out of a 51 Mercury thats been in the family since it was near new. It had a Gyptal colored paint on the inside and it was still in good enough condition to leave it alone. I figured if it has been there that long, it will likely outlast me. I wouldn't get too worried about actually painting in there myself but since it was already there what the hay.

I have about 30 years on my engine with Glyptal on the inside.......it still looks new......no sludge, nothing.......

Do not know if the Glyptal is the reason, but it certainly did not hurt.......

I rebuilt a T9 Warner Gear (spur gear transmission in Ford lingo) for my WW2 IHC a few years ago. That, and the spare I robbed some gears from, had the red presumably glyptal paint inside. The one had many chips missing, but it had one gallon of water and no oil. May have had something to do with the poor condition of the gears!

I believe the transfer case had it as well.
 
My C59A has about 5000 on it, and when I dropped the pan I noticed it had Glyptal or similar painted in the block. And it was clean as a whistle.
 
I did use the red Glyptal years ago but I still have a new gallon of black in the basement. Got it from a welder that worked at the local GE rebuild shop.
 
I have rebuilt several V 12 engines and painted the inside of the block. My first engine did not have paint on the inside and when I tore it down the upper areas were rusty from condensation that built up inside the engine.
 
I have painted the inside of the block and will powder coat the pan inside and out, ALSO the trans, inside and out, for the same reason, the oil will fall back to where it belongs, yes I will spend some time masking hole, maybe let some coating drift in the shaft holes for the cluster shaft, for a better seal ?? ..I have been in and around engine shops where some very hi-end engines were built, and the inside where polished or coated with porcelain, for the same reason, so the oil will fall off,and not be carried with the hispeed parts inside, the same reason,some will build a "dry sump " engine, to get the oil out of the way .....OLD...BILL
