Similar to what Brent suggested, I put together a list for our next restoration. Since I'm not yet actually working on the restoration, for many reasons, mine is currently just a parts wanted list.
But, to reduce the duplication of parts buying, here's what I've done. I had the Judging Standards with me and went through the car piece by piece, comparing what was on the car to the JS. As I found items incorrect or not in the condition I wanted on the finished restoration, I would add it to the list. This process took quite a while.
My next step was to go through my parts stash, again with the JS in hand. I searched for parts on the list. When items were found in the appropriate condition, they were tagged for the car and taken off the parts needed list. In the end, this left me with a fairly accurate list. This was a time consuming task, but well worth it. I don't have a huge collectin of parts as some do, and it's fairly organized so I know the general areas to look for certain types of parts. But having gone through the JS in detail and tagging parts made for an accurate list of needed items that should keep me from buying too many duplicates.
Plus, when I give my list to friends that get to attend Hershey while I'm sitting at home, that accurate list leads to great early mornign phone calls of parts scoring success!!!
But, as many of you, plus my dear wife, knows all too well, there are certain parts that we never pass up when they become available, right?
