"Tis a puzzlement, at least to me

'36 engine: I thought it was frozen - until I jacked up a rear wheel and discovered that there is about 6" of wheel movement each way before it stops with a gentle thud.

Many thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Fred

Thanks. Clutch in, everything rotates fine - from the rear wheel. But using the crank, still the same thud...thud. Seems a bit more metallic as the wheel moves forward and it seems to be louder on the right side. Time to take the head off? Intake off?

Thanks to both of you.

Fred

Look at the front of the engine and rock the car back and forth in 3rd gear. See if you can see the crank pulley moving. It may be stuck solid, and all you are seeing is drivetrain lash.

Is it in gear?

If the pulley is moving then stopping, and moving back and stopping, then it may be something like stuck valves.

Without knowing if it really moving or not, it's not worth writing chapter and verse on what to do next.

Could be liquid in a cylinder - it don't compress. "Thud" might rule that out, but I haven't heard it...

Well that's a good sign.

I'd pull the heads and inlet. Get a good look at what you are dealing with. Maybe rust build up in a cylinder, or stuck valves.

You don't want to break anything.

Do you want to get it running as is if possible, or will it be torn down and rebuilt regardless?

Mart.

Put about 3 ounces of diesel fuel in each cylinder and let it sit for a couple of days. If the rings are rusted to the cylinders, that might help break it loose. Squirt diesel fuel into open exhaust valves from plug holes and let sit. Remove intake manifold and squirt diesel fuel into intake valve stems and let sit. Put trans in high gear and rock car back and forth. If all that fails, you.ll have to tear it down

worked on an 8BA flathead and it did the same, owner decided to try to pull the car to loosen it-bad move a valve was stuck so bad that it went right thru the hollow lifter-in the end we pulled the heads and about 4 valves were stuck like that. I would follow the advice about soaking it and give that a try before pulling the heads, also look into the cylinders and look for moisture in them

AIR PRESSURE::: Pull all the spark plugs and oil the cyclenders as V12 says, and apply air pressure, about 100 lbs, use a rubber tipped blow gun, to each cyc. should crank or thud to thud, you should hear air going everywhere or in one cyc only ?? .....OLD....BILL

It's a b!tch to get the heads off but still way easier than messing with an overhead valve engine. Could be simple or could be catastophic but it will only cost you a top end gasket set to find out for sure.

Well,,,,Fixed another one.....That's what we say at my work place when a problem is solved....Glad it worked out for you...My vote was starter, like someone else mentioned ,I had to unbolt my starter and let it relax the tension....Rocking did nothing...Glad you figured it out....Carl
