Tired...Tire

In my opinion, if the outdated tire's sidewalls and treads are not cracked, and if the tire's tread depth is legal, coat them with a preservative and keep using them. I use 303 Protectant. Also, when you buy tires, specify the age of the tires you can accept. Be cautious of tires sales because dealers rid their inventory of outdated tires using sales. Another issue is the tire pressure. I go buy the pressure on the tire's sidewall in lieu of the standard 35PSIG.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt...rubber is an organic material and like all organic materials it degrades over time. Just because a tire "looks" good does not mean the rubber itself is still sound not to mention the cords within the tire that have become stretched or even detached over the years. I, like most everyone do not relish the thought of laying out over $2K for new tires but at what value do you place on your life or that of your passengers if you are driving around on 30-40-50 year old tires? It's not if they will fail but when and that when, according to Murphy, is usually at the worst possible moment.

Bob, perhaps you didn't realize but the maximum pressure the tire is designed for is what is listed on the tire itself.
A particular vehicle is engineered for a specific size tire with the PSI designed / engineered for that particular vehicle.

He’s not the only one who over-inflates. I’ve told these guys they’ll get uneven wear from doing it, but they say they prefer the ride quality. Most of these cars are driven so little, the tires will dry rot before they wear out the tread.

My grandpa got more more flat in his Maxwell driving from LA to San Diego. He was out of patches. So he stuffed straw from the field by the side of the highway in the tire to get home. Back then that was an all day trip. The fields are gone and the highway is no longer a narrow 2-lane road.

During the depression my dad would get an old tire from a junk yard and put it over the bald tire on his car. I guess it was on the rear because he said that the outer tire would roll on the inner tire and cause problems when braking. One reason he married my mom is because she had a new 1937 Ford.

My Garfield tires wore like iron and rode like iron! I finally replaced them with a set of American Classic Bias Look Radials. The improvement in ride and tracking is dramatic, wish I'd done it years ago.

When I was doing a lot of long distance bicycle riding (25 years and 30 pounds ago) I used to carry several strips, about 5” long, of old tire carcass with the beads cut off. If a tire started to show cord, or got slashed, I inserted the strip between the tube and the outer tire to get by until I could get a new tire. Much more compact than carrying a whole tire. A folded up dollar bill would also work for a short distance. Had to do this more than once.
