Tire Tariffs

I've read the posts above and won't make any comment about how those tariffs will come to be but there is another aspect that hasn't been mentioned here. How many think that no other country will impose tariffs on American goods in retaliation? What effect will that have on the scenario?
America is NOT an island. It relies on exporting goods just as much as any other country but might find itself suffering if others impose tariffs in retaliation.

I many cases they are already on American products and also some other countries won't allow certain American products to be imported.

So true, Synchro, but that logic is much too complicated and does not win elections.

Not knowing the American psyche or political scene very well, what would happen over there if (when) the election promises backfire and people are worse off?

Ugh, politics is an amateur sport best left to the amateurs. Political commentary is a fools errand.

Back to the Model A's!

America doesn't allow high tech stuff to be exported. I had some Model A parts (new and used) in a container a couple of years back and US customs decided it would be a good idea to search it. They took a crank handle. The loss was well worth the laughs we still get out of that!
I understand not wanting certain information landing in certain hands but.....

Here’s the rub for me. China manufacturers without various health, safety, employment, and environmental regulations, Chinese manufacturers are polluting the world. Remember the acid rain sprinkling down the forests of the northwest USA? If tariffs contribute to shifting production from china to western countries that have environmental regulations, then I’m okay paying a little more for the health of our world. Call it leveling the playing field tariff.

This is a vexed topic and I'll leave it at that but I will be watching whatever unfolds as will most of the world, I think.
Que sera sera.

One potential wrinkle is that China could choose to respond by devaluing its currency, which would make its exports cheaper even with the tariffs. Then they might increase the tariffs. Along the way, a lot of companies become collateral damage. US agricultural exports are particularly exposed to trade war effects.

Jeff, you have your "Germans" backwards. the north are the snobs and I am from the south and we speak poor mans German. Swabish............

The northerners always had their noses in the air........ kind of similar here, and Im from the north in this country. lol

Grier and Alex, great comments............remember, the chinese arent stupid.

we used to be smart........ and then a lot of pixie dust entered our system and blinded us.

There have been several excellent pieces on tariffs in Bloomberg and the WSJ. First off, tariffs are generally used as levers in negociations. Many of the tariffs put in place between 2017-2021 were left in place. There is speculation that the Chinese government will suck it up as their current economy sucks and they can't afford to lose any US business. There isn't a lot of difference between the Chinese government and Chinese business.

The outcome of geopolitical conflict is difficult to predict, and I would urge particular skepticism of anyone predicting that the other party will "suck it up." Remember that domestic political concerns, such as appearing to be weak, frequently outweigh "rational" economic concerns.

Here is an article in Ohio AgNet summarizing a report on the potential effects of a tariff "war" on US ag exports.

I run a tight ship around here, and I flat-out refuse to let politics or anything even remotely resembling that vile circus infiltrate my sites. None of it. Zero tolerance. If it even smells political, it’s getting the boot. Period.

Why? Because modern American politics is a grotesque, soul-sucking sideshow. A freak parade of liars, grifters, and power-hungry clowns fighting over scraps while the rest of us choke on the fallout. It’s disgusting, and I won’t host it here or anywhere else.

So, yeah—I’m drawing a hard line. Apologies if that ruffles some feathers, but this is sacred ground, and I won’t let it be tainted.
