Tire mounted rear view mirrors

I attended the wonderful "Field Day of the Past" last Saturday (google it for more info) They had about 50 cars in the car show section. (And hundreds of commercial machinery, displays, working engines, rides, and about 30,000 folks attending. Did I mention the BBQ dinner and homey made ice cream and the new dairy bar with real milk shakes?)

A Model A on display had side mounts with mirrors. He used clear rubber hose to protect the tire and rim from mirror-chain rub. I had never thought of that. What a neat idea.

Those shiney tire mounted mirrors sure do look pretty, but are about as useful as XXXs on a boar hog. When I first got my twin side mounted Sport Coupe, I thought boy o boy they would look mighty sharp. I got the leather strap verity so they would scratch the wheels like the chain ones. As I recall they weren't cheap either.

Just try rambling down the road with them and the mirrors shake so much you can't see a thing in them. They are totally worthless. I gave mine to my club for a silent auction. Buyer beware!

Exactly the same experience here . They are now sitting in a box in my garage

BTW One XXX on a boar hog is useful !!:)

Well, if anyone wants to sell their tire mounted mirrors I will buy. Understood they are useless as mirrors but for just looks I am in the market for two sets. Please contact me via the forum message system.
Thanks..

I have them on a 31 deluxe I just bought.. I don't try to use them as rear views, but they do work really well as blind spot mirrors as they sit forwards and are trained on that area that the modern cars like to hang out.. Just off my rear fender.. I am thinking about getting some ful size stick on fisheye blindspot mirrors to put on them.. I think that would really help out the visibility :)

Yep, apparently a lot of people have no idea what a blind spot is because a lot of drivers like to hang out there, whether I'm driving the Model A or modern.

I use my mirrors every drive. I adj the left morror to the blind spot, not to the road behind me. It has saved me many times. My inside mirror is useless with the top up. The right mirror is helpful, but it gets knocked out of adj and I forget to get help in adgusting it. I can reach the left mirror from my seat. I have a titanium plate in my neck so I can't twist my neck as much as I used to.

Clem, it has been so long ago that I had my TMRV mirrors I can not remember if I ever tried to use them as "blind spot" mirrors. I agree with all who have pointed out the problem of drivers who seem to insist on driving in the "blind spot". My cure for that is one of those stick on "fish eye" mirrors that stick on to my side view mirror.

Happy and safe Model A Motoring! :)

As you may remember from my whimperings about my 39 peeekup truck, them womens just keep chasing my old cars andI can't gets nothin done. To the point, yes it is easy to pull up to the 4 0'clock position on an interesting car in front of you and sit there to look at the car. I have to watch my selk and not do that maneuever. If I can't see the driver in his outside mirror, he probably can't see me.

WE have to drive thinking about both safety for us and the idiot driving nearby us.
