Timing

After reading the information on the "barn" and various books, I have to say that it's a mistake to use the fan or the belt to turn over the engine to set the timing.

It's no big deal to use the crank with one hand and push on the timing pin with the other to feel when it pops in.

Why put extra stress on the fan ? You have the correct tool with the crank.

to each there own, with the plugs out there is absoultly no compression in that motor. you can't do any damage. you can even turn it over with the crank pulley by hand, or is that a sin also? someone shed some lite on what is going to be damaged, by useing the fan or the belt to turn the motor over, with out plugs in. if thats the case don't take your rpm's over 2500.

Just wanted to update everyone. It appeared to be an issue with the distributor. We put a spare on and set the timing. We used a mini camera on a wire hooked to a little screen that my dad has for plumbing to find TDC and it worked perfectly. So got the timing all set and it fired right up and ran very well. Now obviously I found 100 more things that I need to work on, but it runs great and I took it around the block a few times so we were happy with a hard days work. I'm so lucky to have someone like my dad that knows about the cars and can help me out, and it helps me to learn as well. Also thanks to everyone on here that helped and made suggestions. There didn't appear to be any kind of vacuum leak so that was good.

so good to here. JAN:):):)

Yes, it was nice to see something good come from the day. Found out the brakes aren't the best, but maybe I'll get lucky and they just need adjusted. If not I will reline them. We did that on my Coupe in my avatar so no reason I can't do it on the Sedan.
