Timing on my '40 coupe

I'm looking for some information on setting correct timing on my '40 coupe. The distributor is the original 'eggshell' type (pre '42). The engine is running well at idle and low speeds, but when i get over about 40 mph timing seems off. I did adjust the vaccuum brake and it improved a little, but the problem is still there.

I want to remove the distributor and re-set the points...i don't have a timing fixture available...but i've been led to believe it can still be done???

Any help would be great!

D Staig, it dosen't make much sense to remove dist and reset points, replace them w new ones. Set at .016 [buy quality points] Do the setting with the coil screwed down to the dist. This is a must. Set timing at the middle mark on the plate. The dist tounge is off set ,not quite in center, match it to the slot in the cam.Vacume piston should be almost all the way out.Go in with it a 1/2 turn at a time and retest by driving for pinging. ken ct. usa
