I can only set the time my 292 engine for the left side or # 5 plug. What is wrong with this engine. and it has a hesitation when you accelerator at any speed.
I agree with dmsfrr unless of course someone install engine backwards.check and double check.you will never get it running right trying to time off #5 cylinder good possibility you have 1 and 5 plug wires mixed to say the least.let us know what you find
It might not be as noticeable as you'd think.
1 & 5 are right next to each other in the firing order and you did say it has a hesitation at any speed.
When troubleshooting a problem starting with the basics can save time and unnecessary head scratching. (as evidenced by the lack of hair on my head)
The diagram I attached above also shows the normal orientation of the distributor & cap in relation to the block.
Well...the firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2 and that goes counterclockwise. Check your spark plug wire positions at the distributor cap AND make sure they are actually plugged into the proper spark plug.
Set timing by connecting the timing light to spark plug #1 and try for about 6 degrees TDC. Some folks around here like to advance a little more that 6.
A good timing check is best done with a dial back timing light. I always check the vacuum and mechanical advance, and the total. It's a lot more relevant than base timing.
