Timing gear cover: Can It Be Done Question

We need to check the timing gear on an early 28 engine. The Andrews book (mine is missing somewhere) and local experts both say the cover and the timing gear can be removed without taking the radiator off. But what about the early models with no front engine mount strut assembly? The engine basically bolts direct to the frame in the front. Do you know whether we can dismantle it without clearing away the radiator and other things? Thanks barners, Rancho

If all you are doing is checking the timing gear, removing the side cover alone would let you inspect the teeth. If you wanted to take the front cover off as well you would need to block the engine up somehow, since the front engine mounts are an integral piece of the front timing cover. But doing so without taking the radiator off is doable, just fairly tight quarters.

While never doing it to an early 28, I cannot see why not. Maybe loosening the rear mounts as well will allow the engine to lift a little for more "wiggle room".

I've done what you are asking about. You need to remove the bolts in the rear mounts and jack the front of the engine up to clear the cross member to get the cover clear.
