Timing contradiction?

Timing contradiction, or an I reading wrong? On 7-25-11 there was thread about timing. garrisonm89 says " with timer disconnected from the pull rod, rotate timer towards the fan belt until the #1 coil buzzes." Doug Money says "Disconnect timer rod from timer. Raise spark control on steering wheel all the way up. Move timer clockwise until buzzing stops. Then move timer counterclockwise until buzzing just starts. Both say to bend rod to fit. These to directions give 2 completely different settings. Dougs seems wrong because the rod is so far off it would have to be bent a lot.

Shouldn't make much difference, unless you are timing on different cylinders.

I like to set timing to #1 piston. The old trick is to rotate the crank handle with plug out of #1 and you can hear when you reach top dead center on compression stroke.

Then turn the crank a bit more to have the crank pulley pin rest at about 9:15 -3:15 if looking at a clock face. The crank pulley when straight across is TDC. But you want the timing to be about 15 degrees past for elect start T to save the Bendix.

When you set just past TDC, then move the spark lever to full retard at the steering column. With the timer rod detached at the timer case, rotate till you hear a buzz, at the point where you don't hear #1 buzz, and just as it begins to buzz. That is timing set at 15 degrees past TDC on #1 cyl, ......bend the timing rod to fit the timer case that that spot, being sure to keep the timer lever at full retard at the steering column.

I use a handy test tool threaded into #1 with a gage to read out degrees, and an LED light connected to #1 coil at the box, it lights up right at the spot. But using the buzz sound and being just pass TDC on #1 will do it for you!

Sorry you seem to have misquoted me. I was asking a question on 7-25. The bottom of my post was a quote from someone else. I think I was actually asking the same question you're asking now. The bottom part of my post was a quote that I pilfered from someone else on the site. Please understand I should probably never be listened to when it comes to advice. I can only ask goofy questions and unless it has to do with sleeping and eating I'm not much of an expert on anything.

Yes I thought those were your instructions. I always search before I ask a question. Then I ask to get it clear in my mind id I'm not sure. In my search I found the two ways to do it and the one you posted was right. I think the other one using cw and ccw might not be looking fron front of car they way I was doing.
