Timing - 1935 flathead - help

Hi all

Thanks a lot for your help.

Maybe some day I will stumble over a timing device.
Tried bidding on ebay but the bids gets astronomic and I still have to pay import tax afterwards.

I got 3 sets of point on ebay - old stuff in the original boxes.

I pulled the distributor yesterday for all full inspection. Everything is perfect.
Oiled and greased it and set the advance on the 3 line, that's one line below center line on the indeks plate.

Going to pick up my new sparkplugs now and will keep you posted.
I'm still optimistic :-/

TDS, if you cannot get access to a timing tool, What about using the ruler method?
I have a general question about the fuel side of this problem.
If as TDS suggests, plugs 3 and 6 are not firing due to drowning in fuel. If the power valve leaks, does it affect those two cylinders more? TDS said it blows a big cloud of fuel at revs???
TDS, As you have had backfires, it may be a good time to test the power valve?
Do you have the vacuum line connected in the right place (carb end)

If the car idles well, then the problem is not so likely timing but spark distribution (cross fire, misfire?) or carb progression from idle?
I'm just trying to prompt the clever guys on here.

As this is new everything then one should check the basics: Compression test, use a vacuum guage to see what is happening??

Hoop, I like your clear posts.

Bluebell, Thank you ... and your recommendation of using the ruler method is excellent and appropriate. I sent TDS those instructions this morning via PM.

Here's how it works on a helmet distributor ... drawing thanks to BillM on this forum.

VanPelt also has a page on the ruler method with photos (if I remember correctly it is of the later distributor).

Hi Guys
Been away on a holiday to Greece….

I set the distributor by this tread:
http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126536&showall=1

Replaced all the plugs and it fired right up.

It‘s now spinning smoothly and no after- and back fire under acceleration.

I believe that, I either added just a little too much MMO or that the power valve is leaking as I am getting a lot of black smoke when revving. Turning the idle screws does seem to change much at idle.
I will see if it clears up after a next refuel.

Thanks all for your help and the links to the patent site and the timing tread - It was a big help.
