Tightening Tie Rods

Group,

Is it possible to turn the screw on the ends of the tie rod (After removing the cotter pin) without removing the front backing plate ? I would like to see if the spring is compressed 1/4 of it's length.

Marc

We just added the teflon cups rebuild kit to mine and we did not remove the backing plate. You have to disconnect the steering linkage to do it though.

Marc,

I ordered (I think from Brattons) the teflon rebuild kit. It comes with teflon cups, springs, and end caps. that is what we replaced. Dad, just pulled the pins, I rotated the S wheel and he popped the steering linkage off. After that both wheels rotated freely and he could repeat the same proceedure for the tie rod ends and all steering knuckles. all told it took about 15 min. Hope this helps.

Mike,

So that I have it correct :

1. Remove drag link
2. Turn wheels so that one tie rod end is clear.
3. Replace/Adjust End Plug
4. Do Other side
5. Replace Drag link

Is that correct ?

HOw do you like that teflon kit, Mike? I have 1 I am putting on my coupe as I restore it. I was curious if it made much difference.

Hi Marc,

That is what I remember dad doing. Do one side then the other and reattach the steering drag link. On the trip I took with her around the block she didn't steer like a tank. I think they smooth things out but then again my steering arms are a bit worn. Dad took her for a 10 mile break in run and said the steering is fine. I have also rebuilt the steering box and as far I can tell she steers extremely well-as long you are moving.

Group,

Tightened up the drag link and the tie rod ends by turning in the plug. The "book" says to compress the spring 25 %. However, you can't see !

Steering is better. Next I'll remove some "play" in the steering box.
