Tight fit?

I've owned 4 Model A Roadsters in my 58 years, but always wanted a Phaeton. Got the Phaeton about a year back, and admittedly, I'm moving slow. Put seats in today, originals from another '29, and I simply don't fit.

Now, my best friend just bought a '29 roadster, and though I've put a few pounds on in the last 25 years, I fit in his roadster exactly as I remembered all of my previous ones. Is there really that much less room in a phaeton? I'm scrunched right up next to the steering wheel. Somethings gotta give.

As phaetons age the steering columns get longer...............(smiley goes here)

Sorry for stealing your line 1931 flamingo

Answered my own question. (you guys were less than helpful  ) According to the pix at motor mayhem of model A drawings, there is an additional 1 1/4" clearance to be had in a roadster vss a phaeton. Also learned that while I should have 12" clearance from the seat back to the steering wheel even in a phaeton, mine is down to 10 1/2" for some reason. It's an argentine body on a 1930 chassis and retained the 1930 steering column. Perhaps the 30-31 columns are a couple inches longer to compensate for the higher belt line of the later cars.

Apparently at 58, I am 11" thick. Something has to give. Anybody got a '29 steering column in good usable shape with steering wheel for me?

Hey Jim. Sorry for the above dig. Just my sense of humor. You are probably right about a 29 column being a little shorter than a 30-31. I really did not know there was a difference between a roadster and a phaeton for fitment. Perhaps someone with a 29 phaeton will chime in with some more info. Myself, i would love to own a phaeton. Good luck with it. Mark.

Jim,

A man in our club has a 29 Open Cab Pickup; he ordered seats from LeBaron-Bonney that are made 2" lower on the bottom seat and 2" thinner on the back seat; he is 6'1", now has pleanty of room. I don't know if you could get simular seats for you Phaeton.

I'm only 5' 8" and 140 lbs. so I don't have a problem with any A body styles.

Ron
