Tie rod too long

1930 fordor. I am also having a problem with my tie rod being too long by over an inch. The car is new to me and the toe-in is over an inch. The tie rod measures at 44". Everything looks ok, the tie rod ends have been rebuilt. There is lots thread exposed when it is screwed in all the way. I am going to shorten it about 5/8" at each end. Any other advice?

I think before you do anything that drastic you might consider whether anything else in your front end is bent or worn. I’ve seen front axles bent such that it drives the spindles closer, which would have the same effect you are seeing. Or one or more of your spindle arms might be bent.

How was the tie rod bent? Was it hit with something during an accident? Were the arms at the wheels bent at the same time, which would lead to the longer rod not working? Check the geometry of the total steering system.

I seem to remember something in the Service Bulletins that mentions early changes to the steering geometry to reduce tire wear.
