Tie rod end repair

When rebuilding he tie rod ends is it necessary to remove the brake backing plates?

There doesn't seem to be enough room to remove the old plugs with the backing plate in place.

Also, if I have to replace the steering arms is it very difficult to remove them? Will I have to use a torch and a huge C clamp to remove them?

You should be able to remove the nut on the steering arm, were it goes into the spindle. You then can get at the tie rod ends with the arm removed.

Just turn the wheels to the left to get the right plugs loose and visa-versa. steering arms should be no problem to remove if the assembly is not all rusted up. Use a block and tap them out.
