Was cleaning/preping various parts for POR15 and after removing tierod/draglink ends, noticed both rod/drag tubes have long cracks opposite the 1" slot's @ either end of both tubes. Can only assume they have reached there expected service life and are showing weak spots? The cracks are through @ each end approx 2", but a thin line is visible along the length of both tubes connecting the cracks. Hopefully I've explained my ? Unable to get photo's @ this time. Any input would great;)

Sounds like you need to replace them. what is the year and make? they are available for some.

I'm restoring a 39 1/2 ton P/U. I assumed they needed to be replaced but had to post the ? Looking @ stainless to break up the black under the frame. Thank's for the post jdl:D

Could it be that the "cracks" are actually weld seams? It's possible, maybe likely, that the tubes were actually made of sheet steel, formed and welded. If so, they cut the slots on the side opposite the weld seam. See if there's any vestige of the "crack" / weld seam along the full length of the piece. Also, if BOTH ENDS of BOTH PIECES have the same condition, it doesn't seem to be a failure. But, that's my opinion....

I've come across a few tie rods over the years that are not welded at all but are just a rolled piece of tubing with an open seam. Sounds like this may be the case here.

This sounds like what I'm seeing. I have a small fiberoptic scope and the inside of the tubes seemed solid and consistant. Thank's for the input guy's!
