Ticking sound

I have a 1950 FordCustom with a flathead v-8. It run good has good oil pressure. When it is running it makes a ticking sound. I was told by an old timer that was normal(not that I am too young). I have had the intake manifold off recently and it was very clean and I had someone hit the start and watched the valves move up and down smoothly. Can anyone confirm that a ticking sound is normal? Thanks Jerry

The flat heads generally have some tappet noise that is audible due to the lack of zero lash lifters. Without hearing it in the flesh, I wouldn't be able to judge whether your sound is a normal one or not. A worn engine can get some piston slap and an exhaust pipe with a small hole in it can make a noise very much like a tapping sound.

One of the regular Barn members here just recently had a piston break on him and it started with a tapping sound before it let go. So it's a hard call without hearing it in person.

My 226 6 cylinder sounds like a Singer sewing machine that is powered by hamsters on a wheel. It's been like this for 35,000+ miles. So until it breaks, I will run it.

Do you have access to a stethoscope? Put your ear to a long screw driver with the other end touching different areas of the motor. Like the fuel pump stand.

I made a short movie of the car running with sound but can't attach it. Does anyone know how to attach a movie? Thanks Jerry
