Ticking noise

I have a 1928 engine in my Model A speedster. I have an intermittent ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine. It always stops when I pull into the driveway and let the engine idle. I have gone over the engine with a stethoscope but don't hear anything unusual. Is it possible that the starter drive pinion is contacting the flywheel at times? I have the starter out and don't see any problems although the pinion is rather loose on the shaft. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Check to see if the ring gear has not moved back and is fully seated against the flange. Kurt has a good idea.

I have not tried running the engine without the starter. I may have to try that. The fan is fine. That was my first thought. The ring gear appears to be well seated. I have two questions. What keeps the pinion away from the flywheel when the engine is running? What is the purpose of the large spring on the end of the starter drive? Thanks.

Hello, the spring you mentioned keeps the gear away from flywheel.running engine without starter mounded would eliminate that Ada problem,as mentioned in other posts, good luck.
