Throwout bearing replacement

My new release bearing is just a loose bearing, any tips on removing the original from the collar and installing the new one?

Just to clarify. What year car, engine and transmission are you dealing with? If you're referring to the clutch release throw out bearing,
you need to replace the entire bearing as a unit.
That requires pulling the transmission .

It's a 1940 Ford. Obviously it's all apart. What I have is just the bearing, how do I remove the old bearing from the collar? I see speedway sells them as a unit but why spend more money when I already have the parts.

Plus, it's easier to source a US-made bearing vs. having to use the assembled offshore assembly that Speedway sells.

I have done it a couple of times just using my bench vise. Never had a problem.

Tubman,

I need to do this as well. Did you use a socket or piece of pipe as the die and block the back of the bearing to remove it from the hub? Then reverse it to install?

I learned something new. Thanks. However, do your best to search and buy an American made bearing.

I'm sure I did, but it was a couple of years ago so I don't remember exactly. It had to be pretty simple, because if it would have been difficult to any degree, I'm sure I'd remember what I did. One thing I can tell you is that I have a 3/4" drive socket set that gets used more for dies and spacers than it does for nuts and bolts.

I do remember that it didn't take much force at all to move it.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any issues I didn't know about. I've read about using a usa bearing. Thanks! Nick

The throw out bearing I need to replace is for a 1953 Ford Customline. The engine is the 239 cu. in. flathead V-8.

To remove the old bearing, just hold it in your hand and hit the center hub with a rubber mallet. Its worked for me many times...
