Throw out bearing help

Did a sneaky few years ago on the thrust bearing by removing inspection plate , drilled a pin hole in bearing case , filled with grease via grease gun , then soldered the hole up or use JB , Did hundreds of miles on it . Derek in a wet NZ
My Friend, Chuck, has been doing this for several years with success. He uses a "grease needle" that pops on a grease gun.
I've done that on sealed ball joints that have become seized & SQUAWK & SQUEEK.

HAHA just had a squawker last week emergency fix.. Pick hole in the boot PB buster with a straw for quick penetration to the squeak then a needle point shot of chassis grease.

I have 1928 A with multi disc clutch. I went into a stop and go parade and at the end experienced clutch slipping. Next day worked okay. I took off cover plate and found throw out bearing sliding okay but cannot turn it. The grease fitting is not showing and must be at bottom. Should I try and turn bearing with wide wrench to unfreeze it? There is no noise coming from it.

Had a similar problem a while back, thought it was the bearing, as it involves removing gearbox I changed the complete clutch but the noise was still there. Turned out the ring gear had moved forward causing it to rub. Gearbox out again, flywheel off this time and a new ring gear fitted, problem solved.

Read my posts on my experience, might help.

Suggestions were made to spot weld the ring gear thru the starter hole or even drill and peg, I chose to fit a new ring.

Dropping the back end isn`t to much of a problem, I took the wheels off and used 3 dollies, one for each hub and one for the a frame, a large G clamp either side of the spring for belt & braces and lowered the axle with spring in place ( twice).

Dennis.

p.s. all of my "experience" came from this forum, the hints and tips etc., for which I am grateful, there is not another forum like it...............

Keith I dont think I answered you right it sounds like your clutch is slipping and t.o. is tight it sounds like you need to adjust your clutch the t.o. should turn freely with your fingers until you step on clutch I wouldnt drive the car until its adjusted

How about this. Engine off. reach in if hands fit and roll the bearing, feeling for wobble, roughness in the bearing. The fingers will be back and not contacting the face of the bearing. If OK, drop the starter and inspect the ring gear. Then check for end play on the crank. .004 on a new engine bottom end. about .012 max wear limit.

Thanks I'll try adjusting

Keith, we could move the bearing on the shaft and it would spin easily but when moving it you could hear some grinding noise from it. I could'nt believe all the work we had to do just to replace this throw out bearing. Put the new one in and got everything back together and the noise was gone and everything worked great.

Adjusted clutch and throw out turns normal. I have now about 2 ins pedal travel and taking longer for everything to stop turning to get into gear when starting. Thanks
