Throttle shaft bushings

Hi,

I apparently need to bush the throttle shaft on my carb. Does one need a drill press to punch the casting or can a hand drill be used? What is the best way to keep everything in line? I am debating if I want to do this or have a shop do it.

I would recommend a drill press. Some people use a mill. You need to clamp the top casting is a drill vice and clamp the drill vice to the drill press platform.

The way I do it is line the casting up by placing a 9\32" bit in the drill press and manuever the casting around until the bit goes down through the throttle holes centered. Then without changing the set up replace the bit with a 5\16" bit. Drill the casting out being careful not to go clear through the blind end of the casting.

Bratton's carries the bushings. I install them using JB weld. You will then have to ream the bushings to fit the throttle shaft. There are three graduating sizes of reamers, depending on the throttle shaft you are using.

It is important that there is no binding when you have completed the job. It is not all that difficult, but if you have never been through it I would recommend someone helping you, or having it done. It is very easy to ruin a good casting.

have you checked to make sure it is the casting that is worn?
most of the time i find its the shaft thats worn as the brass is much softer than the cast iron
i have a handful of old throttle shafts that were worn out and a new shaft corrected the problem

Tom and Mot thanks for the replies. I was afraid that I needed a press and I don't have one, so I may be going to my local shop. I am not sure the casting is worn or if it is the shaft yet-not taken any measurements. But at least I know where to go now.

Brattons has an oversized throttle shaft if you don't want to install bushings. Snyders and others probably carry it also.

I have used rosen core solder to build up throttle shafts. Rosen core builds and files fairly easily. This really comes in good on the B carbs. As far as I know, B throttle shafts are not available.
