throttle rod not holding

throttle rod does not hold past 3 oclock position. I wanted to set rpm up a little without using pedal. anything I can fix/adjust?

my GAV seems hard to rotate. can I lube the cable inside the jacket somehow?

Thanks, Dick

Dick There is no cable on the Gav. It is a straight rod that connects directly to the carb. You can take the part that the gav on the carb screws into and remove the small wire washer off the bottom to free it up a bit, or just lube that a bit with something like Tri Flo. To get the throttle to hold a bit you can carefully bend the quadrant up a bit.

To get the throttle to hold a bit you can carefully bend the quadrant up a bit.

Also, with now nearly 80 years of wear, the "indents" in the quadrant and the "tooth" on the bottomside of the throttle (and timing) lever are worn and don't hold the lever in place.

Both of these can be worked with a file to make an audible (and feel-able) "click" noise indicating the notches/tooth are doing their duty. In fact, this is usually mandatory in my shop when I re-build a steering column. (I've done a couple now.)

in addition to the recommendations above about deepening the teeth on the quadrant and bending the quadrant closer to the lever to increase tension, you might check the spring at the base of the rod. If its broken, there is no tension. Also, the rod can get stuck in the upper and lower holes. The spring tension relies on the rods being able to move freely up and down, so the spring can pull the lever against the teeth in the quadrant. If the rod is rusty or worn so there is a ridge preventing it from downward movement, the spring cannot do its job.

Okay, before we get ahead of ourselves. What kind of carburetor is it? I have seen some "Model A carbs" that have cable controlled GAVs.

Worked on a 33 4 cylinder coupe. Part of the same problem was the cable sharp bend and was binding where it was held to the manifold. Make sure you have a nice smooth shot for the cable to travel. Long gentle curves are ok, quick sharp bends are not.
