Thread on double nut tappet

I don't know.

Sounds like you're trying to figure out how to make one adjustment and have it turn out correctly.

I keep turning till I get it right, which means maybe twice.

I was until I found an easier way.
Loosen the lock nut and then print get the piston positioned to the point where you measure the gap. You can then tap the adjust or on the tappet until you get the proper gap. Reposition the piston to the point you normally adjust and relook. It works most of the time, just remeasure to make sure it didn’t **** and you’re done

I might have had it right the first time and it wasn’t meant to be shift
I must have had a bad ring, because I now have a scored cylinder
It just never ends

While it looks bad, I think it will take a lite honing and be good to go
Never scored a cylinder trining an engine over by hand before
