Was driving the other day and all off a sudden the car starts making a strang ticking type sound. About 10 seconds later the car slows down on its on the then eventually dies in the middle of a bust road. Go to start it at it feels like the starter is just spinning. Got it towed home and find out there is no water in the car. Not sure where to even start.

Well your first problem is driving on a bust road!

I'd start with rotation - is the starter turning the engine?

When you get the engine turning, does it have compression? (Possible valve issue causing loss of power?)

Then check for spark and fuel.

Fill the radiator with measured amounts of water. See how much it is down. May or may not be related.

Unusual symptoms. I am very interested in how this turns out.

As a side note, maybe relevant, when I was a little boy the family car was a 1929 Model A, and every time my dad drove it -to work, to the store, Sunday drive- any time or place- before he started it he would check the oil, water and tires. That would be at a time when the Model A was only 25 years old. That regimen was instilled in me very early, and while I am not as religious about it as dad was, I do make those checks quite often.

Just tried to start again. The fan does move when when starting so that should be a good sign the motor did not sieze

The ticking noise could be pinging from detonation if the water was dumped.
Check the colour of your oil. If a grey froth that is where the water is.
