Third brush adjustment

Installing a Fun Projects 6v+ regulator.

How do I physically adjust the third brush for generator output voltage?

I removed the band, and see the brush holder, Clymer manual says move it in direction of rotation (clockwise viewed from rear) then 1/3 back etc.

Ok, do I use a stick, finger (want to keep them), screwdriver etc to move the brush?

Adjust with motor/generator running or engine off?

Oh and amp meter reads -1 with battery disconnected.

Thanks

Engine off - Loosen the brush holder nut enough to move the brush holder yet stay in place once moved.

Engine running - Use a popsicle stick, plastic rod or anything that won't conduct electricity and move the third brush holder to the desired output. Turn off engine and tighten nut. Restart engine and retest.

Your VR came with detailed instructions on how the set the current output. Follow those instructions EXACTLY! It's not uncommon for ammeters not to zero. Tap it and see if moves back to zero. Sometimes a static charge will hold the needle off zero. If not, use the current position as zero--The centering spring could be weak.
