Oh hell, the Imperial to Metric system didn't go so well....
So am I. It seems some industries haven't caught up. That said, it is obvious that all of the systems work in a similar way and work just fine. It is when we try mixing them that the troubles start. IMO, we should dump BSPT and NPT and all go metric as a world wide standard. I'm not holding my breath on that though.

So I should keep my pre-war Whitworth spanners?

No, it did go well. That is for those born in the 70's and later. But Gary (born 1947) still becomes confused or uncertain at times.
Synchro,I fear you are too late with your metric unification idea. ISO has already adopted for metric pipe and tube the BSP system including the Whitworth 55 degree thread form and pitch range. For port threads, metric sizes and pitches are used with O rings or washers.
So we have NPT with 60 degree threads and (very!) slightly different pitches for all sizes except 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 where ISO, BSP and NPT are all 14 tpi and taper threads all use the same taper. So they fit together in these 3 sizes but the threads forms are different, so a good seal cannot be obtained.
This is a constant trap and annoyance in my shop.
The larger pipes from 1 inch to 2 inch differ only by 1/2 tpi. ISO and BSP are 11 tpi but NPT is 11.5 tpi. When up a ladder using a large pipe wrench and sealant-lubricated threads, roughly cut as pipe threads often are, fitting mismatched pipes together can be rather confusing.

Maybe where you are, but here, gas is still gallons, milk in quarts and Football field is 100 yards.
If you think cars are a mess, you should see CNC machines. You need a machinery bible and mcmaster carr catalog to adapt anything.

Would you believe the guy who does those sculptures is confined to a wheel chair? We have visited his display at Boort a couple of times on rallies. What you see are HUGE and yet not the biggest he has done. They are remarkable!

I have seen Mcmaster Carr mentioned here before and assume it is some hardware business or industry supplies. Otherwise, I have never heard of them. If that is so, and you need their catalogue to adapt to anything, as you say, maybe it would be a good idea to dump the system virtually no one else uses.
Metric conversion was trying for the older people when it was done here in 1974 but they have all either passed on by now or learned it and we are way ahead compared to where we would have been if we had not converted. There are only 3 countries in the whole world that have not either converted to, or have always been metric.

Your gallons are different to ours. We only got a pint of milk years ago. Our cows must be smaller. Football here is nothing like yours so it is not compatible.
With the early internet software was given away for free so as to standardize it everywhere. Maybe pipes should be given away for free?
