I got tired of looking at the white stuff so tonight I wiped it down with motor oil. I imagine it just covered it up but I figured I don't have much to loose. It will protect it for now and I can always wash of the oil. At least I hope. 
I'll see what it looks like tomorrow, maybe the white stuff will be back...
